What's wrong with my eucalyptus? ›

Problems. Eucalyptus is usually trouble-free, but may occasionally suffer from oedema, and from the very similar-looking eucalyptus gall wasp. In cooler or exposed areas, they may suffer from frost, wind and other winter damage. Young shoots on recently coppiced trees can be vulnerable to snapping off in strong winds.

Indoors, plant the tree in moist, well-draining soil for best results. Inside, it'll only grow to be a couple of feet tall, but it can get rather bushy if you allow it to. It thrives in full sun, so be sure to set it in a south-facing window or somewhere outdoors where it can soak up the sun.

Take the cuttings in late summer. The cuttings should be 3 to 5 inches long and have four to eight eucalyptus leaves. Use pruning shears to make a clean cut just below a leaf node and set the cuttings in a bucket of water until you are ready to process them for planting.

It's best to let potted eucalyptus dry out between each watering, so in the late spring where we are, that means we don't need to water every day. However, in the peak heat of late June, July, and August, soil in potted plants can dry out in a day. So a daily soaking is probably best.

Just like you would do with a bouquet of flowers, trimming the stems a modest amount - such as one inch - can help your eucalyptus bundle to last as long as possible. This reinvigorates the leaves and provides a fresh opening for them to intake water and nutrients through.
